hot water heater sound

Dear Mr. Love,
I'm not sure of the age of our hot water heater but as of late we hear a clunking sound coming from it (as if it's straining to reheat new water) after a shower has been taken. The clunking sound has even become more frequent in the past week(more clunks per minute). We have hard water and thus a water softener in our basement(not sure of the age of that also or how really effective it is). I'm wondering if the heater is beginning to die or if the water is hard and affecting the heater adversely. I'd like to know if you have any idea what this might mean(I guess if the heater is dying, I'd like to have some research done ahead of time(to replace it with a new one).If you think it may be the hard water, I'll have to check out our water softener. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me, Kiki
