: During the Civil War,legendary inventor John Ericsson designed and built the U.S. Navy's famous ironclad USS Monitor. The ship was such a radical departure from previous vessels that Ericsson had to invent several dozen new devices for the ship to work properly, many of which he patented. Amongst these was a new type of flush toilet. This was in 1861, but I have no idea how his toilet compares to Crapper's device, either technologically or chronologically. If you visit Battery Park in New York City you can see an impressive statue of Ericsson holding a model of his invention (the USS Monitor, not the toilet).
