Calcium deposits in hot water pipes??? (Copper)

Just had new faucet installed in older house along with new shut off valves. When plumber cut through hotwater pipe for copper...he discovered an incredible blockage of what appears to be calcium. (White, chalky, hard) The plumber had no clue what it was, but he saved the pipe for me to show my warrranty company....Is this calcium? Is this normal? Is it safe to drink? The house is 22 years old (pipes too I imagine) and I this stuff comes out in certain faucets aroung the house, but not all. I can tell it has blocked my dishwasher (the inspector at least caught this) and I suspect it is effecting my clothes washer too.. What can I do for this?

Thakns -
