Daryl:--The prefilters used with most RO units are to take large particles and gases out of the water prior to going to the heart of the unit; the membrane. The membrane allows only water to pass through it. All other materials in the water get stopped at the down stream side of this membrane, and are periodically backwashed down the drain. The membrane needs to be replaced from time to time. It is important when replacing this pricey item that you get the proper one for your application. Some are designed to be used in systems that have Chlorine in the water, and others are for non-Chlorinated water. A discussion with someone familiar with your particular model from your area would be the best way to go before doing much more. Lots of luck..
