I have, just in the last two weeks, refinished my old Kohler tub. I recomend setting it upside-down on a couple of 2x4s and going at it with a side arm grinder. But beware - IT IS LOUD! And be sure to wear a respirator type mask since old tubs were covered with lead paint - if you can wet/grind to keep down the dust even better. If you want to have a smooth finnish use Bondo. In the old days the tub didn't emerge from the mold perfectly smooth either, so they used some kind of putty to smooth it out. I think the rough surface lends character. Bondo is not just for cars anymore. I used it to repair chips and nicks in my tub and it has worked like a champ!
