Kathleen:--Your post hints that a return air duct is located some where close to a bathroom area.
Logic causes a little red light to blink in the back of my mind. If there was a bad wax seal under the toilet, and there was a return air grille in the area, and if there was a slightly negative air pressure induced by the squirrel cage blower on the air handler in the area of a bad or ineffective bowl seal. Well it could be the source of your odor problem.
While the A/C is in operation, see if there is any detectable make up air being supplied from the bathroom area (this can sometimes be done by usig a small votive candle and watching for any drafts that affect the candle flame)
Sewer gas belongs in the sewer, considering the source, no one would like to breath it in.
Lots of luck with your search...Bud
