Purging gas pipes before installing shut-off valve

I'd like to extend a Natural Gas line to my natural gas BBQ. I can shut the gas off where it comes into the house, but I don't know how to purge the line of excess gas before working on the pipes. Basically, all I have to do is to screw on new fittings. What precautions do I need to take to ensure I don't ignite the gas in the line while I'm working on the pipes?
