: How tight can I tighten the two bolts that hold the toilet to the floor? It's loose (I can move the front of the toilet sideways a couple of inches) but I'm afraid of cracking the toilet. Is there a rule of thumb: so many turns with a wrench after fingertight?

It depends on how strong your fingers are.

If the bowl is set on a concrete floor, there is less give.
I have cracked a few bowls set on concrete in my younger days.

If the bowl is set on a wood floor, it's a bit easier.
I try to do the finale tighten with water in the tank and bowl.
I snug down the nuts on the bolts to pull the toilet down to the floor.
A bit of caulk around the front of the toilet, from bolt to bolt should do it.
( leave the caulking off at the back )
