shower stall on concrete slab, drain question

The rough-in has a p-trap under the slab, i think. I filled the hole with water, then attached a plastic hose which i blew through. I could feel a noticable difference in resistance, i'm guessing when the water seal broke in the trap. Is this a good way to tell? My stall (MAAX) has provision for a standard shower base drain, 4 1/4 strainer, 3 1/4 hole. The hole is only 1 inch above the concrete floor. Can i get a shower base drain to fit or do i need to cut some concrete to get enough 2" PVC exposed for connection to a standard drain? thanks!
