There are a number of gas tankless water heaters available, as well as the electric. The most important thing you need to be aware of is capacity. Most (all?) tankless water heaters can not produce enough hot water to supply multiple uses at the same time. I.E. do not plan on taking a shower while doing the wash, or while running the dishwasher, etc. The units should last much longer than a tank unit, and when it fails, it should be fixable by just fixing the part that failed (as opposed to when the tank on a traditional unit goes, the whole unit is junk).

The problem that you are most likely to run into is that few plumbers in most areas sell or install these types of units (even though they have been used in Europe and Asia for many years). The ones that do sell them seem to charge an arm and a leg for their services.
