1930's tub stem replacement requires many turns to get flow

I replace the stem on my tub and now you have to turn the faucet too many times to get the water to flow hard. I only replaced one stem, and the only visible difference is that the other one has some longer, kind of oval holes across the shaft. I guess this is where the water flows through it.(?) The new one just has circles. Do you think I could drill out the new one and it would flow better? Or does someone know of a source for old styles stems? I'm told I went to the best place in town, and I'm in a big city so I probably can't get it local.
