broken toilet flange

I have an older house (built in the 1960's). We took out our old toilet, and the flange broke on one side while removing it. I can't seem to find any "how to" instructions on how to replace it, or other alternatives. I believe it is made out of cast iron. Is it glued, welded, or what to the other pipe? How can it be removed? Do you need special tools for this? Can we just use the one good side, and screw the toilet to the floor? The flange is broken on one of the sides where the bolt holds the toilet onto it. It's really left me in a "crappy" mood!
