Possible leaking sewer

I've got a house built aruond 1955 with a crawl space containing the buried cast iron sewer pipes. I was recently doing some repair work under the house and noted some water around an area of exposed pipe where two pipes from the house meet. Is there a way to test for a leak. Someone told me sometimes living near the coart dampness builds up under a house or the water table may rise. There are no drainage problems and there are no other sign of problems. If there is a leak at the "Y" cast iron connector is this a tough and expensive fix. I also did not notice an oder while under the house. Any advice or is this a common problem with moisture building up under a raised foundation
Thanks.
