Kohler bathtub stopper

I have a 5 year old house with a Kohler bathtub stopper that does not work correctly. The bathtub infact drains VERY slowly. Normally, the lever on the overflow plate moves down to stop the water and moves up to drain the water in the tub. This lever on my tub doesn't have a real range of motion - it's almost like it is stuck in the closed position. I've taken the overflow plate off with the two screws on the outside. I can see into the overflow compartment, but am unable to pull the stopper assembly and bucket out. Is there a trick to fixing my problem ? How do I get the stopper assembly and buck out so that the tub will drain ?
