Closing a Basement Floor Drain

I am finishing part of my basement. I would like to plug the floor drain on the low side of my basement to avoid a backup destroying the finished rooms. This would leave me one working floor drain located in my laundry room. What is the best way to perminatly plug a floor drain? A friend told me he just stuffed a rag down the drain and filled it with concrete. My house sits up high and is normally pretty dry. The one remaining drain would still allow for any emergency draining to happen. Any idea's?
