Sink drain, venting?, smell?

I have a sink drain that drains into the main sewer about 2 feet away. The drain is abs to castiron sewer. The sink drain has no venting, should I install venting? Also there are two sinks(one on either side of the wall that drain down the same pipe. One sink never gets used, I took off its ptrap and the water in it smelled horrible, is this normal? There was also a little soot in the drain its self, is the normal? Thank you in advance! Mark
