tandem water heaters - supply lines

I have two 40 gallon water heaters in tandem. We recently switched our heating system to a Central Boiler outdoor wood burner. It also heats the water for the water tanks. The boiler is pre-set to 180 degrees, and yes, I added a mixing valve on the outlet of my hot water.
My problem is the supply lines to the water heaters get hot as well. This causes the cold water to have to run for a long time before it gets 'cold' at the fawcet. Do I have it plumbed wrong (main supply tee'd off to rest of house/water heaters right at heaters), or do I need some kind of one-way valve for the supply lines to the heaters?
