Terry:--I live in Florida too (St. Pete) and am familiar with heavy rains. I would go with one "French Drain", you could go for a second one if needed at a later date. The 50 Gallon drum is OK, but needs to be a Plastic drum filled with number two stone. The perforated pipe method is better in the long run. Best method is to dig your trench 30"D x 20"W...line the trench with Mirafy fabric or a weed barrier fabric. Fill the ditch half full with river gravel. Put in your perf- pipe (holes down if your using PVC perf-pipe). Fill the ditch almost full with more gravel..flap the ends of the fabric over the gravel and back fill....sod. The key to success is to have enough area exposed to absorb the volume of water coming off a 2000 sf roof. You are going to have a lot of spoil dirt left over from this project, think about the possible uses for it. Lots of luck..Bud.
