If the joist bears on the foundation wall along its entire length, a 3" hole should be OK. If not, as a general rule (meaning consult a structural engineer), the hole should be in the middle third of the joist's bearing span. : I'm installing a bathroom vent fan in a basement bathroom. By far the easiest way to install it is to cut a hole in the rim joist to vent it outside. But is this structurally sound (and does it pass code)? The hole needs to be 3" in dia. and the rim joist is a 2" X 8". The alternative is to drill and chisel a 3" hole into the poured concrete basement wall. : Thank you in advance?
