Believe me, you are not the only idiot ! I have had the same problem in a house that we just moved into over the weekend. I actually wake up at night because of this smell.

A friend of mine suggested that I use a half a cup of caustic soda per drain, leave it for 5 minutes and follow up with a kettle of boiling water. Repeat till smell disappears. If it's not that bad it should take the smell away after the first treatment. If not, repeat again.
