Although another 40 gallon heater appears to be cheaper up front, by the time you add in the cost of additional plumbing, venting, (or wiring) etc., you could probably replace the existing heater with a 50 gallon unit and avoid these costs. Seems like a waste to "discard" a new 40 gallon heater, but it may actually be more cost effective.
