Copper pipe DOES leak if you have aggressive water. If it freezes. If you have low pH.
If it is defective. If the velocity is too fast.
On and on and on. There is no perfect piping product. Yes, polybutylene has been known to split, so has copper.

The pipe wasn't the problem unless there was high concentrations of chlorine. That's the same with copper. With high concentrations of chlorine in the water copper will leak over time.
