Natural Gas and Copper supply pipe

I own a 50 year old slab foundation house with copper gas supply pipe. I've removed the old wall heater and want to replace it with a williams or a Cozy. Is copper a safe pipe for gas supply? - there seems to be a lot of confusion, as I've gotten very different responses from people. PG and E came out today and said there was good pressure at the wall heater nipple and basicailly gave the thumbs up. said there was a loss of 3/4 of a cubic foot in 2 minutes, INCLUDING the water heater pilot light and this was also prob. ok. Thanks, Peter
