Replacing stall shower with bathtub

My home is circa 1958, and is all one level, slab on grade. The stall shower leaks like a sieve & I want to install a bathtub, w/shower over. Space is adequate for a 60" tub. Stall shower has a precast terrazo base. The 2nd bath wet wall is common to the shower supply wall, & an outside access panel reveals the cast iron waste/vent pipe. I will open the wall for new supply piping & a mixing valve. I assume that the shower drain connects to the C.I. soil pipe +/- 14" below the slab. After removing the shower base, would it be easier to hook-up the waste line with a below-slab drain & trap, or to buy an above-floor-roughin tub, so piping is all above the slab?
