plumbing making a high pitched whistling sound

When we come back from a vacation, for the next several days we often (15 times per day) get a high pitched whistling sound from our plumbing. We know it is the plumbing because if we open any faucet and run water for a second it stops. But sometimes 2 minutes later the noise starts up again. Eventually it stops but the cycle is repeated if we use water from any sink or toilet. No faucet is leaking. I thought I knew physics fairly well, but I can't think of any reason why this would occur nor do I know how to stop it. Does anyone else? Thanks.
