repairing bathroom ceiling

My husband and I found a small (5"x5")leak in the ceiling of our downstairs bathroom. It seems to be an old leak because the area isn't wet anymore. The area above the leak is attic space, near the corner of the house. Our question is, what is the best way to repair this area? Can we put something over the area before we patch it to prevent water from coming through again (since we don't know what caused the leak in the first place)? And, can we patch it with drywall mesh and put compound over that or do we need to cut drywall to fit and go from there? Thank you in advance for any ideas you might have!
