: My apartment does not vent sewer gas up to the roof. Instead, the landlord has used something at the end of the vent pipes called a Studer valve (I'm not sure if I've spelled this correctly). Even with this, I notice the smell of sewer gas in my laundry closet, where there is one of these vents near the ceiling - and particularly around the opening where the washing machine discharges water. What can I do about this? My landlord thinks the valve should do the trick - but obviously, it hasn't.

Laura,
If the smell is coming from the washer drain, then the "drain" may not have a p-trap. Check to see if indeed the trap is there. If no trap, then no amount of venting will help. Terry
