: We would like to do our new shower in natural stone. Some people say marble is requires too much care but we like the color selection. Is marble really a pain to care for in the shower? Marble is polished to a glossy finish, but usually isn't sealed to prevent water intrusion. Some people aren't aware of that and assume the polished finish is waterproof. Marble is still a rock, and therefore is porous to a degree. Install the color you like, grout it, and then apply a very high quality water sealer. Soap scum is the major offender, since it allows the deterger to penetrate the microscopic marble pores, and then discolors when it dries.
