: WHAT DO I NEED TO LOOK FOR WHEN COMPARING DIFFERENT MODELS ,DOES THE GRAIN RATINGS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Tom, the grain ratings indicate how much capacity the softener will have. The biggest aren't always the best to buy, as they can be less efficient in salt usage. Your family will require a certain number of "grains per day" This is calculated by multiplying the number of gallons used per day, by the compensated hardness of your water.
Then there are demand initiated softeners that regenerate based on the number of gallons used, rather than an estimated amount. These will be slightly higher in price. Then there are twin demand systems that have no timers, these are the most efficient, and easiest to regulate.
If you need more help, feel free to click the link below to shop for a softener, and get free consulting for choosing a system. You can even have your water tested via mail, or buy a simple home kit to test it yourself. Hope this helps
