removing valve stems from shower H2O controls

I'm in the middle of attempting to remove and replace the washers from a leaking bathtub faucet.
I've gotten to the point where I can see the stem and the washer is slid out onto the shaft of the stem but I can't figure out how to remove the stem from inside the housing so that I can slip a new washer in place. All the turning in the world won't remove the stem from the wall housing.
It's Saturday,9/26/98 at 5:15 EST, I'd really like to get a shower sometime tonight so if anyone can help me out with an E-mail, I'd greatly appreciate it.

(In need of a shower in Pennsylvania :-)
