: Durock Cement Board has a textured side and a smooth side. I will be laying the cement board over 3/4 inch Tongue and groove plywood sub-floor. Ceramic tile will then be laid over the cement board. Which side of the cement board is laid over the subfloor and which side accepts the ceramic tile?

Smooth side goes down, textured goes up. Make sure you don't just screw the board down. You should also use morter underneith the board. This helps make sure the board won't flex or move (which leads to cracked tiles). Use a 1/8 x 1/8 notch trowel for the morter, then screw the perimeter only, every 6 to 8 inches.
