Max Distance from tub outlet to trap

I am installing a Kholer clearflo drain overflow assembly to a whirlpool tub. The assembly instructions show both horizontal and vertical drain pipe installations. What is the maximum horizontal distance allowed from the tub drain outlet to the weir in the trap? What are the drawbacks vs vertical installation? Both installations are possible for me, but the horizontal installation can be done without cutting holes in the floor joists providing the trap can be placed 36 inches from the tub outlet. thanks mark
