sewer gas

we have recently added an upstairs bathroom to our very old home. My brother who is a plumber by trade did the work. He ran the waste pipe along the exsisting vent pipe. Towards the bottom of the vent pipe he ran the waste pipe and vent pipe together so that they enter the main outgoing wastepipe together. Each of the toiltets has a vent pipe, which of course all stem off of the one pipe. The problem is that we are getting a lot of bad smell in our upstairs. At this point the walls are still open and we haven't even put the fixtures on. The toilet hole is sealed... What could be causing the gas? Do you feel that the method he used was incorrect?
