HELP! Homeowner's Crisis!

We're having a bit of a homeowner's crisis right now: we just completed a patio in our back yard, and seem to have caused a plumbing problem. When the workers excavated for the patio, they uncovered a stand pipe that had been buried. Since it had been buried all this time (and since we've found lots of discarded bits of pipe and building we materials in our yard and they always turn out to be debris), we dumped the gravel, sand etc. right over it. Well, our bathroom was flooded this a.m., and there was dirt backed up into the tub!! An architect friend of ours thinks maybe the pipe had been/should be capped, and that maybe the cap was knocked off by the guys who dug the area out. AAAAAAAAARGH!!

What do you think? Do we need to rip up part of the patio and cap the pipe? What else might the problem be?

Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated!!
