Groaning/vibrating pipes

Our galvanized water pipes are making groaning/vibrating noises at random times. This noise starts off soft and builds to a crescendo of annoying resonating humming. It does not occur at any specific time such as when turning water on or off, etc. Our house is nearly 50 years old. Our 45 gallon water heater is old and is quite noisy itself when heating water (grinding and bubbling noises), but it is not the direct source of the groaning in the pipes. I am not certain where the noise is originating - somewhere in the middle of our home - it is difficult to trace. Do I have a problem I need to worry about? How do I troubleshoot this if it is a problem?
