Hi Ann; Yes, it always a good idea to keep the new plumbing as close to existing drains, vents and waterlines whenever possible. But before you go tapping into your main stack to tie into any new plumbing, check your plumbing codes first. For instance, the new toilet cannot drain directly into the main stack, as there already is an existing toilet draining into the same stack a floor below. In my part of the world this is not allowed. The only time one toilet can tie into the same stack shared by another toilet is if both are on the same floor. Without getting into too much detail, if you're doing the work yourself, check with a licenced plumber or your local plumbing inspector as to how to run the drains and vents for this new bathroom.
