That should work unless you use tacks to hold it in place.

Or a Metal utensil shorts it out.

Flat wire works great. Only installation example I don't agree with from that site is where they wrapped the wire/strips below the sidewalls of the cabinets. Drilling through them is much better. You have added support for the strips, won't have a chance of seeing them from the other side of the room, and even lighting on your work surface. Your countertops are continuous, so make sure what lights them up is also.
