quote; I like the metal flashing theory. Don't know why I didn't think of that.

Probably because the flashing should have absolutely NOTHING to do with the electrical system.

Then I tried hitting the breaker box a bit with the side of the hammer. It finally did trip one 120 breaker though, so maybe it was a fluke thing that hammering the flashing caused vibration that tripped the 220 range line. I think this case is closed. Thanks all!

I think I would be looking for loose wires.

Good Luck.

I think the flashing possibility makes sense also. I was both hammering and twisting the screwdriver that day. I tried last night to trip the range switch by hammering against the OSB. Then I tried hitting the breaker box a bit with the side of the hammer. It finally did trip one 120 breaker though, so maybe it was a fluke thing that hammering the flashing caused vibration that tripped the 220 range line. I think this case is closed. Thanks all!
Well, that's totally ungratifying. Come back when you can't stay so long.

A house that old probably would not have any AFCI breakers, but if some additions were made, some of those were used, and there was a loose connection, you might trip the CB.

I thought of flashing, metal lathe, or maybe a nail in the way of the drill. Have you looked inside the breaker box since this happened. A long shot possibility is you finally knocked loose a piece what ever metal you hit and a piece fell down into the panel and across the breaker. Instant metal vapor, but could trip it. Looking at the wiring it seems like an open space in the top of the box has a reasonable probability.

He drilled into a Mouse House, a Mouse ran up a wire and got across the output of a breaker.

I hate that smell.

I thought the flashing theory was that prying with a screwdriver moved the flashing such that it cut through the insulation on the range circuit wires a few inches away.
