I recently bought a new toilet and it came with a part called a "toilet connector" which sits over top of the flange and wax ring.. I'm just wondering though what the purpose of this part is and whats the difference of say using two wax rings or something?

I would check that part for a patent number. Looking at the patent would tell you the purpose.

You could also ask the maker of the toilet. It may be to adapt a toilet from a different hemisphere to our closet flange system.

Is there a rubber gasket that mates with the top of this piece. Because otherwise, I would worry that this extra surface could be a cause of a gas leak.

Yes there is rubber around the inside hole of this part

Then the purpose of the piece is to adapt the toilet to the flange. Clearly they use some other system to hold the toilet down.

If this were thicker, it could be like a Unifit adapter for a really long rough-in. But it is not thicker. Is the piece that slides into the hole from the top made of porcelain or plastic?
