Our well water has never had any sort of smell or any metallic taste. Yesterday, seemingly out-of-the-blue, we noticed our water smelled a lot like chlorine when taking a shower. It's a very strong smell - similar to when public water gets chlorine added. We did laundry this morning and the clothes have a very strong chemically smell. The metallic taste appeared at the same time. Our water never had any sort of discernible taste, but now has a strong metallic taste that started with the chlorine smell. Any ideas?

Here are the details:
- We have a private well (not on public water)
- We have a water softener system that has plenty of softener pellets
- We have an acid neutralizer tank that isn't running low
- Well casing does not seem to be compromised
- We had the hot water tank replaced about 2 months ago, without error or noticing any changes
- We've had a significant amount of rain the past few days

Do you have a nearby neighboring well?

Did that neighbor sanitize lately? I don't know if you are likely to detect chlorine from a neighbor sanitizing 75 ft away, but it seems possible.

It is also possible that what you perceive as chlorine is something else.
For low range testing, LAMOTTE 2963LR-G .25 ppm to 10 ppm chlorine test sensitivity, looks good. LAMOTTE 2979 is 0 to 5 ppm chlorine. https://www.zoro.com/search?variants.attributes.Testing_Parameter=Total%20chlorine&q=LAMOTTE%20 A pool store might be able to detect your chlorine in a sample if that is what you have.

Is your acid neutralizer calcite, or do you have an injection pump that meters in a solution?
