we bought a reliance 606 water heater on 10-05-2011 and the pilot wont stay on.

I aad the same issue with mine! What fized it was very simple. No tools required! At th. Bottom of the water heater there is a black plastic screen, remove that and make sure it is clean. Second take a shop vac and reverse the hose so that it blows instead of sucks and blow out the lower compartment! Now replace the screen and relight the pilot. This has to be done to these heaters approximately every 6 months!
