I hooked up a filter system for drinking water under my sink and installed a separate little tap beside the existing sink taps. I tapped into the main water line coming into my house right at the entry point where it comes through the concrete basement foundation downstairs. First copper line going anywhere is to the drinking water tap. After the drinking water tap I installed a filter and then a water softener. Problem is I'm tasting salt in the drinking water line. Is it possible that I'm pulling water back somehow from the water softener when I turn on the drinking water tap? If so would a simple flapper valve solve this problem?

From your description I can't follow your plumbing.

You install a softener on the main line and usually all the water in the house goes through the softener, or the outside faucets don't, or in some areas a hard water line is run to the kitchen sink. Your filter should have been installed on the line going to the kitchen sink, but not back to the softener if that is what you are describing.

Salty water could be due to using water during a regeneration or having the salt dose set too high or more likely incomplete final rinse.

I agree with Gary. The salt you tasting could be due to drain line being somehow blocked and not getting full flow to wash out the remainder of the salt after regeneration.
