Hello,

Just bought a house and it has a cartridge type filter on the cold water line that feeds the hot water tank...and it is pretty nasty. I would like to replace the cartridge, but there are no identifying marks on the filter assembly anywhere. How do I go about identifying which filter to buy?

Common nominal sizes for what your picture looks like are 10x2.5 and 10x4.5 inches.

Look for an O-ring. If the O-ring fails, your water system is out of action; your filter has no bypass. Lube the O-ring lightly with silicone grease -- never Vaseline or other petroleum product. I bought a 5.something ounce of Molykote 111, and it lasts a long long time.

Hey, wait a minute.
