Very niche market, more marketing than functional. Very limited application. Traditional methods are typically a lot less expensive, last longer, and simpler. UF is ideal for removing cysts, viruses and bacteria but other methods are also very effective and less expensive. http://www.csmfilter.com/upload/csm/swe/prod1_2012515114753.pdf Check out this link for details about the specifications for a common UF membrane.

Seems to me, it might be cost effective as a stage before RO in commercial/industrial application. Thanks for that link.

It is very commonly used for pre ro treatment, primarily in waste water application, and even desal. I would guess that 99% of applications, it has no use. Advances in traditional membranes and higher quality low fouling membranes have eliminated a lot of the UF from a lot of the builders.
