I have a dripping leak in my tub drain (see the 2 attached images from underside of tub). My question is do I fix this leak by simply replacing the stopper assembly in the tub OR do I disassemble the pipe underneath the drain and reseal from below?

You work from above. Unscrew the strainer off the shoe, clean the old putty, put fresh putty, install a new gasket where the show meets the tub and screw the strainer back in. A helper under the tub will help tremendously.

You may need to use a strainer key (plumbing places have it) or a long nose pliers.
