I am putting in a thermal expansion tank and at the same time changing out some of the flexible hoses.

I notices the hoses at Home Depot say FIP female Iron Pipe but it has a gasket inside so I am assuming this would be for a straight thread male not tapered as the sealing is done by the gasket inside of it.

However the fittings on my water outlets from the wall appear to be all tapered. Also the nipples on my water heater also look to be tapered.

Seems like existing ones sealed appropriately but they did put on some teflon tape as well which to me would be the equivalent of putting it on a garden hose outlet.

Any clarification would be helpful. I have googled and cant really find what I am looking for.

Fittings on water heaters are tapered, and the the male end for the expansion tank.

Flex connectors come with rubber washers that make up the seal. No tape is needed on the flex's.
