Hi, I have a temporary fernco patch on a vertical 4" cast iron drain. Gonna replace the whole drain after Thanksgiving. Anyway, the CI has the letters on the back of it, right up near a wall! I tried to sneak a grinder in there to take the letters down, but it's still leaking, even after I added silicone. (By feel I'd say I did get the letters down flat for the first inch or so.)

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I used fernco's for transitioning from CI to PVC a while back and had issues with burrs and leaking on that connection. I was able to grind it down enough where it sealed ok.

In looking back if I had a mission band coupling, I think that would have sealed over the slight burr where the fernco could not.

(DIYr advice not a plumber)

Fernco is a brand name, but most folks think of it as a neoprene sleeve with a hose clamp on each end. These are not acceptable for above ground use. They will not hold pipe in place. They are OK if they are buried. What you need is a banded coupler. These have a wide clamp over the entire fitting. For a very temporary fix, Tom's suggestion of just adding more clamps might get you by for a short time.
