hi,

What to use on PVC male connector to screw in brass valve?
Anything better then Teflon tape?
Are there a paste that works better in this combination?

I had used teflon tape for brass to brass with great success, but it doesn't work for PVC in my case.

thanks.

Teflon tape is OK.

"Pipe dope" is good, and is preferred by many . Some use both.

Rectorseal No. 5 is classic, and is very good. http://www.rectorseal.com/pipe-thread-sealants/

In any case, don't overtighten. Both tape and pipe dope have lubricating properties, you could overdo it. Since your PVC is the male part, you are much less in danger from over tightening that if the female thread was PVC.

I suspect don't need a wrench for 1/2 or 3/4, but http://www.usplastic.com/knowledgebase/article.aspx?contentkey=802 seems to imply that you do, depending on your interpretation of hand tight.

http://www.ppfahome.org/pvc/ says

For threaded connections, always:
  • Use Teflon® tape or approved paste thread sealant.
  • Assemble threaded joints carefully (maximum two turns past finger tight).
It seems to me that hand tight is much tighter than finger tight.

PVC to metal - I only use tape. Never dope.
Metal to metal - I use tape and dope.

Should you wish to use pipe dope, be very careful about the version you use to ensure it is compatible with the plastic (in this case, PVC)...some are, some are not. One not rated plastic could end up softening or damaging it.

What's diff between N5 and N2 for my situation?
Both will work well. RectorSeal T Plus 2 is newer, and costs a little more. I have used No.5, but the other looks good too. Both are good for PVC and brass.
