what's the difference between stepping down the line and keeping the 1/4" grade and just going with a steeper grade

From what I've read, if the slope is too great, the fluids no longer carry (float) the solids along.

Jim, this issue has been hotly debated, but I think the theory that the water outruns the turds has been debunked. I don't remember anyone actually quoting a code section which placed a maximum on the slope.

Can anyone put this to bed once and for all?
