Does any code require that bathroom sinks have pop-up drains or any other similar device? By similar device I mean anything to plug the bottom of the sink.

I don't know, but there would be an easy solution.

OK, I'll bite. That's a solution to what exactly?

Solution to whatever problem you were having that caused you to raise your question. If somebody is claiming you have to provide a stopper due to some real or imagined code, cheap solution. If you were trying to stopper your own water and hoping to get somebody else to pay for it, cheap effective solution.

Just in case the question wasn't clear. IPC 416.3 requires some type of obstruction, such as a popup or other devices listed, presumably so a larger object can't fall into the drain. It does not require that device to be able to close and seal the drain opening. Is there a requirement elsewhere, in any code, for a device that closes the drain so as to allow filling the sink?

And no, I do not have any problem, I would have said so if I did. It's a theoretical question that came up in conversation and I don't know the answer.

I don't think there is a requirement that lavs have stoppers. There are plenty installed commercially that don't have stoppers, and plenty in homes.

They don't need stoppers but in commercial use a grate is required to prevent objects from going into drain.
Giving code answers is difficult. They can be different depending on areas you live.
